Today I sat at the pond at a nearby park. Shortly after I arrived a family of four came and set up near me. The dad and his son who was probably no older than three pulled out a remote control battleship. He gave his son the control and watched as he steered it through the fountains and around the barrier of the pond. After about 5 mins the wind began blowing a little harder and the kids driving got a little more reckless.
I was in awe that a little one could guide a remote control boat so well that when he started ramming it into the walls it made me nervous. I'm like sheesh he's gonna break the dang thing. Most of the time I watched the boat but decided to look up at the kid and he seemed cool and collected as he banged that poor boat all over the place. I looked up at the dad thinking he would be wincing but nope, he was even cooler than the kid as he watched. Occasionally the boat would get stuck in a corner and the kid would just walk over to find it and his dad followed behind to release the boat and they continued on. I learned some things from this interaction...
1) Sometimes we start out smooth sailing and then winds hit without warning
Whether it's a threat to our physical health, a distraction, heartbreak, or loss, sometimes these things hit when it feels like life is finally going smooth. Life is not void of trials that's why the Bible speaks of them so often. But we must
understand that while weapons may form against us they cannot prosper (Isaiah 54:17). When the winds hit we have to keep steering. We have to keep moving forward so that we may walk through and receive the peace of making it to the other side!
2) We have to be so focused on the task at hand that we don't let the wind cause us to give up, lose heart, or become frustrated.
That little boy gave ZERO cares about what was happening with the wind. It was the people around that had the greatest fear for him. Today he taught me that you have to stay focused on the goal no matter what! You can't worry about the waves that are trying to overtake you because when God has promised to get you to a destination He will make good on that promise (Phil 1:6)!
Sometimes the people around us, in an attempt to show care and concern, will become so anxious about your moves that they project that anxiety on you and may have you pull out of the pond too early. If God has given you direction and vision let no wave or no man deter you! Keep moving forward.
3) When we face the storm we can count on our Father to be right there with us calm as always.
The dad stayed near to his son the entire time. The boy didn't have to look up for reassurance he just knew he was safe. Occasionally the dad would kneel down behind him and speak in his ear, the kid would smile, and the dad would stand back up.
God does the same thing for us! He never leaves or forsakes us (Deut 31:6; Heb 13:5). He is always near. A very present help in the time of trouble (Psalm 46:1). And when we need it. He kneels down, draws near to us, and whispers what we need in our ear to encourage us and keep us on the path He desires. Then He will stand back and allow us to move trusting us to keep moving forward.
What a blessing to have a Father who knows when we need Him and desires to stay close to us to ensure that we don't stop when it gets rough. Can you hear His encouragement? Draw near to God and He will draw near to you (James 4:8)!
4) If we get detoured or stuck in a rut don't freak out! Face the problem head on and God will be there to do the release work.
God is a loving God. A God that is a refuge to His children and one who will protect them from harm and danger (Ps 46; Ps 91). If you've found yourself stuck in a rut He is there to give you a way of escape that you may be able to bear until you make it all the way out (1 Corin 10:13)! Trust the Lord our God to release you from the trouble you may face! Look to Him and watch Him work it out!
Whatever the wind looks like in your life don't become flustered. Scripture says, be anxious for nothing (Phil 4:6)! Let God know what you need and trust that He's standing with you ready and willing to guide you whether the water is still or raging.
I pray you have an awesome rest of your night!
