You’re not the first to look out this peephole. Seriously, you’re not. While every situation is not identical there are people who have experienced something similar to what you are going through. Take advantage of this! You don’t have to figure it all out on your own.
One blessing is having people in our lives that are older and wiser than us that can give us life lessons regarding certain challenges, issues, trials, etc. If you don’t have one please stop what you’re doing and pray for one right, right, now and that they be perfect for what you need in this season! We don’t always have to make every mistake ourselves we can learn from those who’ve been there done that. We don’t always have to figure things out on our own. Why reinvent the wheel when there is someone that may be willing to help us navigate?
Why should we take advice?
Besides what I mentioned above? Let me introduce you to Proverbs 11:14 NRSV
“Where there is no guidance, a nation falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
You can go ahead and replace the word “nation” with your name or whatever corresponds to your situation. By counselors the text does not mean any old person but someone with godly wisdom. A lot of us have unbelievers as mentors, I honestly don’t see anything wrong with that but let’s get a balance in there. Try reading Psalm 1:1-6 and get a better idea of what a wise counselor would look like.
You know it’s our duty?
One of our duties as children of God is to build each other up by not letting each other fall.
“Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.”
-1 Thessalonians 5:11
That means speak nicely to people, especially if you see them going down the wrong road or going through. Build them up through word, prayer, kind words, through sharing your testimony, and by giving advice if warranted. If you have experience about something and are led to share then share. And to the recipient, you always have the choice whether to accept the advice or not but try to be open to their sharing.
I am aware that many of us won’t accept advice from others because they lack credibility, mostly due to the way they represent themselves or Christ…hmmm let’s talk a little bit about this tomorrow in How are you reppin you? As far as today goes…use the people around you. Not to pull them down but to mutually build one another up so that we can go higher into who we were meant to be and higher in Christ. We don’t have to go it alone!
