As you travel on your journey towards purpose you may start to encounter more people that talk out the side of their neck than ever before. Not everyone is able to control their tongue as the bible often commands us to do but we are going to have to. It would suck if we missed out on a blessing or had it delayed because we decided to give someone a smooth cuss cuss.
If you know where you are going in the spirit and understand that the enemy is working to do all he can to stop you, then you have to know when to speak and when to shut up (Ecclesiastes 3:7)
The following comes from my study time in early March a day after I failed at holding my tongue…I want to share some of it...
Proverbs 17:27-28 NIV
The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered. Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.
1. Don’t take it personal
They don’t like the God within so let God handle that. If you try it is emotionally and physically exhausting.
2. If I must speak do so with restraint
State the facts that God has led you to share and that’s it! If they choose to hear, awesome! If not, pray.
3. Be even tempered
Stop operating off emotions and allow wisdom to guide. The spirit revealed the following to me: “Yesterday you became so upset you couldn’t hold your emotions together. You were no longer looking to preserve my name but your emotions” We have to learn a calm balance and stay out our feelings.
4. Silence is wise and often times necessary
Shhh just listen! I have a huge issue with listening. Ha and I call myself a mental health professional. Seriously it’s hard for a lot of us to really listen. But a lot can happen in silence. It allows room for the Holy Spirit to work instead of our emotional flesh, it gives the other person (and our ourselves) a chance for inconsistencies to become apparent and work themselves out, and it gives us a chance to pray for the right words to use, if any. And my goodness, even fools can do it =).
Sometimes you just have to shhhh be still and know that He is God!
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, and I will be exalted in the earth! (Psalm 46:10)
