television with a couple other children minding your own business. Then all of a sudden you hear your mom start complaining about trash bags that are full, dishes in the sink, you not entertaining all the younger kids, and not pulling your weight with the guests. She must have been irritated by the distraction of hosting. You automatically think, “wait this ain’t my party, I didn’t ask these people to come over, I don’t even know these kids like that! You volunteered yourself and house for this not me.” But you only think it because you are not ready for the pain that would ensue if you actually voiced it or let your facials make the statement for you!
This example reminds me of a story in the Bible about Mary and her sister Martha. The story can be found in Luke 10:38-42. Martha invited Jesus into her home and just as any good hostess would, she served Him. She became distracted with all her serving, and came up to Jesus like, “Yo, don’t you care that Mary left me to do this all alone, tell her to help me” [my translation]. Jesus, who was not afraid of her response, told her that she was worried and troubled about many things but there was only one thing that was needed and Mary had chosen that thing. He was pleased with the attention that Mary had given to sit at His feet and hear His word.
There are several lessons that we can get from their story. One of the things that stick out to me today is that it wasn’t really her desire to serve that was a bad thing. It was her priorities in the moment and her attitude. It’s like, why take on a task if you are going to complain?
Sometimes we get frustrated because we’re far too busy or doing something for this person something for that person, something for them something for them and nothing for us. When we get into this place we may become angry, bitter, or envious causing us to react in sinful ways. But the truth of the matter is why get mad, because if you're doing it you have volunteered yourself for it!
True, there are some things, events, and meetings that are probably required or mandatory but you always have an option to show up or not and deal with the consequences of either. And if you have been asked to show up whether that's by your boss in order to keep your job or whether that's by God in order to stay on your post that's just what you have to do! The question is how do you respond to these mandatory events in your life? The ones you feel like you have no other option but to say yes? Do you respond with a smile and open heart or with an attitude and a complaining spirit?
Our first key scripture touches my heart each time I read it but I won't say that it's always touching it in a fun-loving fuzzy way. It tells us that whatever we do we must do it heartily unto the Lord.
I can be honest that there are many things that I've done in the past and even a few things I have to do currently that make me grumble and complain but that is not of God! We know He doesn't like a complaining child! We learn this through the people of God in their 40-year trek in the wilderness. God is asking us to try something different! He is asking us to do everything unto Him! No matter who is asking us to complete a task, no matter how we feel in our bodies, no matter how mundane or irritating the task may be we must serve as if we're serving Him directly! Whether we're serving in our jobs, our church, an outside ministry, the volunteer center, or serving our children, we have to do it with a right attitude even if we don’t want to be there or if nobody else is helping!
Sometimes these moments of rebuke or redirection hurt initially but then you realize it's for the best! Because of the attitude check, you're not gonna burn out, you're not gonna hate your job, you're not gonna hate your ministry, you’re not gonna hate your children, and you'll be able to do everything heartily unto God! You will begin to see great rewards. Those rewards might not even be for you but you'll see great rewards for the kingdom! So, sit at his feet let go of everything that He tells you to let go of, begin to do what He has told you to do, and do it as if you were doing it unto God!
Have a blessed day!
