In Matthew 6:9-13 we find the Model Prayer that Jesus taught. Today, I want to share it with you in the Message version.
With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:
Our Father in heaven,
Reveal who you are.
Set the world right;
Do what’s best--
as above, so below.
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
You’re in charge!
You can do anything you want!
You’re ablaze in beauty!
Yes. Yes. Yes.”
As I looked at this passage the other day, there was one line that resonated with me, "Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil."
I have always been my greatest enemy. Today, I want to pray with any of you that may be able to relate.
Lord, I pray that you will keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
I pray that we will not conspire with the enemy to sabotage anything that you are doing in our lives. I pray that our thoughts will align with what you encourage us to think about in Philippians 4:8.
I pray that we will not move too quickly out of emotion, but that we will be still and know that you are God and as we give up the need to control everything that we will experience a spiritual transformation that causes us to look more and more like Christ every day (Psalm 46:10).
I pray that we remember we don’t have to fix anything for ourselves or other people and that we can allow for you to be you since you’re the best fixer. May we just continue to create conditions for you to do your best work.
I pray that we release the guilt, burden, or shame of anything we may have done or has been done to us. I pray that we will be moved by love and not by guilt or obligation.
I declare that we will do our part and allow for you to do yours.
Thank you, Lord, for keeping us safe from our own warped thoughts, emotions, and negative inclinations but more than that we thank you for taking those very things and helping us learn how to think and respond better. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Which line in Jesus’ model prayer found in Matthew 6 resonates with you today?
I encourage you to come back to this Scripture the remainder of the week and see what stands out. It might be the same line, or it could be a different one. Either way, allow your Spirit to lead you in prayer with Jesus, our chief intercessor!
