Some of us are extreme professionals when it comes to this ability to handle multiple functions, roles, and programs all at the same time. This is a skill. But it also comes at a cost.
I have had the pleasure of looking after my niece the past few weeks.
Sheesh, I just love her!
Last week, this little ball of love reminded her aunt to be present!
As I sat down to feed her, I brought my food with me as well as some writing that needed editing. I felt so accomplished as I balanced her bottle, my fork, and my editing pen until I glanced to check on her and noticed her wide eyes staring directly at me. When I made eye contact, she plastered the biggest grin on her face.
This smile automatically evoked a conviction to remain present with the one who mattered most at that moment. Yes, my tummy was excited about that meal, and I was in a groove with wanting to edit, but those things would be there.
Mariah won't always be a cuddly 3-month-old who desires my attention. She won't always be able to fit in my arms and allow me to feed her without biting my fingers off like my 2-year-old nephew or even my 19-year-old niece lol.
The moments that we have with the people right in front of us are important. We won’t get those moments back. I just want to remind you this week, to be present. Your social media timeline isn’t going anywhere. Your emails will be there when you refresh. DVR is a feature on your televisions for a reason.
Fifteen minutes of undivided attention with those that you are invested in (family, friends, business) can make a huge difference. In those moments with Mariah, I was able to experience God’s peace, His joy, and His rest.
When we are present, we find the very things we never knew we needed at the moment. We learn things about people we would have missed had our head been buried in our phone or our minds fixated on yesterday or what we are going to do next. We learn things about ourselves that will assist us in our next moments when we are aware of what is happening right in front of us.
Be present this week, and I pray in that present-focused mindset you find all the encouragement you need, the answers you've been seeking, and the peace, strength, and joy that are all promised to you by our loving Father.
Stay focused and have a blessed week!
