And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.
Oftentimes we are completely unaware or avoid the cracks, faults, or empty voids in our life that leave us susceptible to the attacks of the enemy. That’s why there are times we look up and wonder, “How the hell did I get here?” A majority of the time we do not become aware of these places in our hearts, minds, and in our lives until a storm rolls in and changes up everything.
Last week, there were men walking on the roof of my house. A bit random for me I must admit until I realized their purpose. The Homeowners Association sent them to do an inspection and with perfect timing because we got some pretty heavy rains last week! I mean especially for Southern California!
Although we were in desperate need of this rain it showed us where we might have some issues with our roof, which felt like the total opposite of a blessing. I mean, think of the costs that are associated with it! But as soon as I started to get frustrated by the thought of having yet another thing to fix God encouraged me to take a moment to look at the entire situation! Although it exposed some stuff that could cost us I could see that the rain was indeed a good thing!
When God allows storms in our lives they can serve multiple purposes. Like I said earlier, California NEEDED water. The drought is real and God supplied us with our need! It cleaned the air and filled our empty reservoirs. But at the same time it displaced those who are living under bridges and who take naps on bus stops. It caused for leaking water to come through into our home. So how is this a blessing? This particular storm showed us exactly where our faulty foundations lie. It showed that we are still very much in need of resources to provide for those who are in need (if they desire the help) and it shows us what we need to seal up and fix in our home!
The storms of life come quickly and although they may wreak havoc on our bank accounts, relationships, our hearts, and sanity they can definitely be a good thing! They will show us exactly where the faults in our own personal lives are and it gives God an opportunity to do some fixing and rebuilding in the most neglected areas of our lives.
The events that have led me to the moment I am in right now, moments of self-reflection, true surrender to God, and a desire to experience His love only came through storms. It came from being without, it came from being torn down, heartbreak, loss, gain of what I didn’t think I wanted or needed, misunderstandings, shame, mistakes, and constant need for repentance and grabbing hold of God's mercy. If it hadn't been for these highs and lows I would never have been able to see all the gaps in my faith. Where I wasn't trusting God, where I was allowing people, places, and things to validate and fulfill me instead of God, where I was insecure, and where I had waaaayyyy too much confidence.
These storms in my life and yes, even the storms in the life of the people I loved, showed me where I lacked and where God could make up for it. These storms were the water on the seeds of what was placed on the inside of me before I was formed in my mother's womb in order for me to grow into the woman of God I’m called to be! God can and will bring increase through every stormy situation! He will use what may have appeared to come to take you out, flood you, mess with your sanity, annoy you to the ends of the earth in order to draw you closer and grow you in Him that others might draw closer to Him in the same manner!
If you are going through something right now and you are feeling a little bit overwhelmed (or even a lota bit overwhelmed) I need to encourage you to put down every thing that you are trying to do to fix the situation.
Put down the bottle, put down the drugs, tell your little boo thang you'll call them later, tell your job that no you can't work 7 days a week because you can no longer afford to avoid the reality of your situation. You can't afford to ignore what is occurring in your life or placing it in the hands of other people. You must take every care to God and come to Him in Spirit and in TRUTH. Allow Him to show you the way of escape, allow Him to reiterate what you mean to Him, allow Him to give you all that you need including His peace that surpasses all understanding! (1 Peter 5:7; John 4:24; 1 Corinthians 10:13; Philippians 4:7)
God is doing something on the sunny smooth days and on the cloudy stormy ones. Trust Him! It's all working out for the good! (Romans 8:28) Can you look to Him for your help today? Can you keep your eyes stayed on Him so you keep your peace! Can you allow for the storm to reveal all the faults in your foundation so that you can renovate, restore, or completely rebuild in Him?
These storms did not come to take you out! Even if you are the one who caused it! They might cause you to lose some things you never wanted to let go of but at the end of the day, that only leaves space for God to give you what you truly deserve! His best! The upgrade! The thing you didn’t even know you needed that goes exceedingly and abundantly above all of your expectations! (Ephesians 3:20)
It's not for nothing! Praise Him in this and become greater than you could ever imagine.
Fix that leaky roof! Get your thoughts in order! And live like the royalty you are!
