Day 3: We are awesome aren't we? The Bible states that we are royalty, fearfully and wonderfully made. Why wouldn't we want to spend a majority of the day thinking about how to further ourselves, build empires, stay in the mirror, or post thousands of pics of ourselves on social networks? I'm here to say continue to love on yourself but don't get so caught up in you that you are no good to the kingdom, those around you, and even the you, you have yet to become.
This devotion is 4 parts, work with me a minute:
Excerpt from It’s a Dolphin…I looked around at the other beach goers but no one was seeing what I saw. Well with the exception of a young man out on his kayak who did a hilarious initial check to make sure he wasn’t dealing with sharks. Everyone else was taking naps, pictures of themselves, or caught up in conversation. I even tried to get peoples attention but no one seemed to want to hear me. *Shrug*
Now I believe in sleep and I often choose it over many things. Rest is necessary, but
sleep also means to be dormant, quiescent or inactive, careless, or not alert. Many of us are lying dormant and allowing our talents to remain deactivated within us. Do not let your gifts remain caught up within you. Do not be careless with your gifts wake them up and allow Christ to shine through you. Once you recognize these gifts and begin to walk in them you enter into a world where favor paves your path and those rare ‘dolphin sightings’ become a normal occurrence in your life. Life is short live it fully, live it now.
This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” (Ephesians 5:14 NIV)
And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. (Romans 13:11 NKJV)
Pictures of themselves
A lot of the people who missed the dolphins were super busy taking pictures of themselves which I’m almost positive were going to be posted on Instagram shortly after. In a world where most individuals live life for social networking it is easy to get caught up in attempting to please followers instead of really doing any kind of good for your family, friends, and community. But if you really wanna be awesome stop living for the photo opportunities and reach out not because it will benefit you but because it will benefit others.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3-4 NIV)
Caught up in conversation
Now I am not saying the people around me were talking about absolutely nothing, I wasn’t listening. But I do know that them being so entrenched in conversation caused them to miss the first dolphin sighting. It made me think about idle talk and how we can’t allow it to distract us. Make sure that the conversations we are engaged in are ones that edify and encourage and not ones that slander and tear down. When you allow yourself to engage in meaningless chatter you become caught up in it and your works begin to mirror it: idle chatter leads to idle works.
And make sure that you aren’t engaged in dialogue that distracts you from your purpose or even unforeseen dangers. If you ever worked retail you kind of have a sense when someone is trying to steal from the store. One thing people will do is attempt to distract you with dumb questions or starting up conversation so their accomplice can take the merchandise. Please don’t allow yourself to get caught up in conversation or responding to foolishness while someone else is robbing you.
Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. (2 Timothy 2:16 NIV)
Tried to get peoples attention
I really tried to get my neighbors to look at the ocean so they wouldn’t miss it but they were not feelin me. Even if they looked at me they ignored me. I thought about how many times God has tried to get my attention and I ignored him. How many more times will you miss a word from God or a move of God because you are not paying attention or simply feel like you don’t want to listen? Pay attention, I’m sure he’s already answered that prayer ;)
Hear and pay attention, do not be arrogant, for the Lord has spoken. (Jeremiah 13:15 NIV)
Catch me tomorrow...we are still rollin with this dolphin sighting theme =)
